Brand Design Lead

The Role
Config is building the data and model layer for real-world robotic automation. This role owns design quality across the surfaces where people encounter Config.
Brand is the core of the job: the website, decks, recruiting materials, and physical touchpoints like robotics demos and booths. The product is also one of the main ways people experience Config, so part of the work is product UX/UI — usability, interaction design, clarity, information hierarchy — done alongside the product team. It's not a dedicated product-design role; the point is to hold the product to the same standard as everything else.
Keeping both coherent is the interesting part, so brand and product read as one thing. That comes from systems rather than a rigid brand book: components, patterns, standards, and a shared design language others can build on. The work should feel precise and consistent rather than decorative — quality that comes from restraint and strong systems, not visual flourish.
Most of these standards don't exist yet, so a lot of the work is deciding what good looks like and getting others to build on it — which means having opinions, explaining the reasoning, and pushing back when something doesn't fit. The role reports to the CEO and works most closely with the CEO and the product team.
Areas You May Contribute To
- Own design quality across the website, product UI, decks, recruiting materials, and physical touchpoints like robotics demos and booths.
- Build and maintain the systems — components, patterns, standards, reusable templates — that keep those surfaces coherent.
- Work on product UX/UI alongside the product team: usability, interaction design, clarity, and information hierarchy.
- Take work close to production using AI tooling, submitting lightweight GitHub PRs rather than handing off static files.
- Identify and resolve inconsistencies across surfaces, and document the standards so others can apply them.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years in brand and/or product design, or equivalent evidence of strong work. Quality matters more than years.
- Strong systems thinking — building design language, components, and patterns with consistency and restraint, not one-off assets.
- Real UX/UI ability, not only visual and brand work.
- An AI-native workflow. You use Figma, but you're also comfortable with tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and v0 — enough to bring work close to production and submit lightweight GitHub PRs. You don't need to be a frontend engineer.
- The judgment to form opinions, explain your reasoning, and own decisions without much direction.
Bonus Points
- Experience building or maintaining a design system used by more than one team.
- A background in technical, infrastructure, or developer-facing products.
- Startup or other high-ownership experience at an early-stage company.
- A genuine interest in robotics, foundation models, and Physical AI.
