Robotics Systems Engineer

The Role
At Config, we're on an ambitious mission: to accelerate the deployment of automated robots that are truly useful in the real world.
To achieve this, the robotics systems used for data collection must themselves be capable of executing real-world tasks reliably and with high fidelity. Doing so requires a tightly integrated robotics systems stack — spanning low-latency robot control, embedded sensing and teleoperation, and high-throughput data acquisition infrastructure — that generates the precise, high-quality data our foundation models depend on.
We're thoughtfully designing and integrating this stack end to end.
We're looking for exceptionally driven, passionate engineers who are excited to take ownership, move fast, and build real systems that matter. As a Robotics Systems Engineer, you will work across the control and hardware layers of this stack. Depending on your background and strengths, you will take ownership of specific components while collaborating closely with teammates working on other parts.
If you're excited about shaping the physical backbone of next-generation robotic intelligence, we'd love to talk.
** This JD is designed to cover multiple levels.
Level: We are open to candidates from interns to senior and senior staff professionals. Level, scope, ownership, and compensation will be calibrated based on experience.
When applying, please specify the level that best reflects your experience and interests. We're happy to calibrate scope and leveling throughout the interview process.
Areas You May Contribute To
- Robot Control & Execution
- Design and implement reliable robot control systems for real-world manipulation tasks.
- Develop low-latency and high-frequency execution pipelines for robot arms, grippers, and bimanual manipulation systems.
- Implement accurate end-effector / Cartesian-space control, including pose tracking, trajectory execution, inverse kinematics, and controller-policy integration.
- Improve robustness, repeatability, and task success under real-world variation.
- Turn fragile prototypes into reliable systems that can support data collection, evaluation, and deployment.
- Sensing, Teleoperation & Systems Integration
- Build teleoperation systems that enable intuitive, scalable, and high-quality data collection, while minimizing human-robot perception mismatch.
- Integrate robotic platforms (e.g., Openarm, Franka, UR5e, RB-Y1, Vega, Piper, etc.), end-effectors, sensor stacks, and embedded devices into reliable end-to-end systems.
- Engineer sensing, calibration, and synchronization systems for multimodal, time-aligned robot data.
- Debug complex failures across hardware, control, sensing, and software layers.
- Data Collection & Robot Learning Infrastructure
- Build the systems that allow robots to generate high-quality action data for model training and evaluation.
- Work closely with other teams to improve how physical systems support robot foundation model development.
- Improve the throughput, reliability, and repeatability of large-scale robot data collection systems.
- Help create the infrastructure that makes robot learning faster, more scalable, and more grounded in the physical world.
- You will work hands-on with real robots in an experiment-driven environment where speed, rigor, and ownership matter.
What We're Looking For
Technically, we're looking for:
- Experience with robot control, trajectory execution, inverse kinematics, and Cartesian-space control
- Hands-on experience building, integrating, or deploying robotic systems
- Strong Python skills and working knowledge of C++
- Experience with ROS or ROS2
- Solid understanding of kinematics, dynamics, calibration, and control principles
- Ability to debug real-world robotics issues across hardware and software boundaries
Above all else, we care about first-principles thinking, relentless learning, and the ability to turn difficult robotics problems into working systems.
Beyond technical skills,
- Engineers who are deeply motivated to build robots that work in the real world
- Builders who take ownership, move with urgency, and care about execution quality
- People who enjoy solving problems across hardware, control, sensing, and software boundaries
- Individuals who are excited by ambiguity, fast iteration, and high-impact technical challenges
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills in Korean and written English
For senior-level candidates, we typically look for 5+ years of relevant research or engineering experience, or equivalent evidence of exceptional technical ownership. For staff and senior staff-level candidates, we look for a stronger track record of independently defining technical direction, driving ambiguous projects, mentoring others, and delivering high-impact systems or research outcomes.
Bonus Points
We'd be especially excited if you have:
- Experience with robotic platforms such as FR3, UR series, RB-Y1, Vega, Nero, OpenArm, etc.
- Experience with multi-DoF robotic end-effectors, such as 3- to 5-finger robotic hands
- Expertise in low-level control, real-time systems, embedded systems, impedance control, or trajectory tracking
- Expertise with robotics simulation tools such as MuJoCo, Isaac Sim, Gazebo, or similar platforms
- Familiarity with teleoperation systems, master–slave setups, and haptic interfaces
- Experience with multimodal robotic sensing systems, including tactile/force sensing, LiDAR, depth perception, inertial sensing, and position tracking
- Experience with multi-camera systems, calibration, synchronization, or robot data logging
- Understanding of how robotic systems interface with AI/ML models, including imitation learning, Vision-Language-Action models, or world models
- Prior experience in fast-moving startup or research-driven engineering environments
